SUMMARY:CEFISES Seminar: Mario De Cario\, "Defending free will against contemporary skepticism"
DESCRIPTION:Livestream https://youtu.be/jdeXnbO78T0 \nSeries: Metametaphysics \nSpeaker: Mario De Cario (Università Roma Tre / Tufts University) \nTitle: « Defending free will against contemporary skepticism » \nAbstract \n« Everyone who does evil is the cause of his own evildoing\,” wrote Augustine\, expressing the view – widely prevailing in the course of the history of philosophy – that free will is a necessary condition of moral responsibility\, which in turn is an undeniable component of our worldview. Indeed\, in the past\, very few thinkers used to deny that human free will is real. \nToday\, however\, the situation appears very different. For example\, according to the renowned Yale psychologist Paul Bloom\, “most scientists and philosophers agree” that free will “is an illusion.” “Most” is a big word here\, but at least among scientists\, what Bloom says sounds plausible since free-will denialists include heavy-weights such as Wolf Singer\, Chris Frith\, Steven Pinker\, Stephen Hawking\, Jerry Coyne\, Daniel Wegner\, Richard Dawkins\, and Thomas Metzinger. In contemporary philosophy\, the situation may seem less desperate; still\, even in that area\, there certainly is a remarkable increase in the number (and loquacity) of free will denialists: think of Derk Pereboom\, Sam Harris\, Gregg Caruso\, Saul Smilansky\, and Galen Strawson. \nIn my talk\, I will analyze some of the main contemporary lines of attack against free will (many of which are based on extreme forms of scientistic naturalism)\, arguing that they are much less compelling than many tend to think.

SUMMARY:CEFISES Seminar: Azat Garaev\, "Constructive Neutral Evolution: A new perspective on robustness and evolvability?"
DESCRIPTION:Livestream https://youtu.be/_F72fAyvUAs \nSeries: Work-in-Progress \nSpeaker: Azat Garaev (UCLouvain) \nTitle: « Constructive Neutral Evolution: A new perspective on robustness and evolvability? » \nAbstract\nSome organisms employ complex systems to perform relatively simple functions. It may be that the complexity only appears to be « unnecessary » while being beneficial\, for example\, by making the system more robust. However\, functional complexity may indeed evolve through a series of neutral steps\, as the theory of Constructive Neutral Evolution (CNE) shows. I clarify the conceptual scheme of CNE scenarios and distinguish two sub-types: Accumulation of redundant structures (such as gene duplicates) and evolution of direct buffering or editing mechanisms (e.g. RNA-editing systems). Then\, I assess how a CNE explanation should be compared to an explanation by natural selection and how CNE should be tested in general. The following questions are discussed: \n– Is CNE distinguishable from the selection for genetic robustness followed by mutational decay?\n– How could quantitative population-genetic models help evaluating CNE’s generality and contribution to the evolution of specific traits?\n– Can CNE serve as a non-adaptive null hypotheses of evolution for the « testing adaptationism » project formulated by Steven Orzack and Elliott Sober?
