SUMMARY:CEFISES Seminar: Kévin Chalas\, "On the (ir)relevance of academic epistemic practices for emancipatory struggles"
DESCRIPTION:Livestream https://www.youtube.com/@CEFISES \nSeries: Work-in-Progress \nSpeaker: Kévin Chalas (UCLouvain) \nTitle: On the (ir)relevance of academic epistemic practices for emancipatory struggles: A pragmatist analysis of the boundaries of sense within academic institutions \nAbstract \nSandra Harding opened her 1986 book\, The Science Question in Feminism\, by claiming that feminist studies of science had turned from a reformist call to improve the sciences by reflection on the situation of women within them toward a revolutionary stance that put into question the very possibility for the sciences to participate in any emancipatory struggles. Forty years later\, one has to admit that no revolution ever came to pass within academia: what could be recuperated from critical thoughts for the benefits of standard academia was; what couldn’t is still grossly marginalized. Yet\, it remains a common idea for progressive-minded academics that their epistemic practices may significantly contribute to the liberation of marginalized social classes and the fight against the return to power of fascist ideologies. In this presentation\, through a pragmatist analysis of academic practices and the way in which they construct meaning and knowledge\, I aim to argue that it is a misguided idea at best\, a counter-productive one at worst. In particular\, I argue that academic epistemic practices hinders emancipatory struggles through the capture of the means of knowledge production and their removal from the public sphere\, a fact already anticipated by Dewey in The Public and its Problems: « A class of experts is inevitably so removed from common interests as to become a class with private interests and private knowledge\, which in social matters is not knowledge at all. » I will end the talk with a discussion of ways to remediate this problem by taking inspiration from anarchist and Deweyan considerations regarding democracy and education.
