SUMMARY:CEFISES Seminar: Lorenzo Rossi\, "Supervaluational truth and quantifiers"
DESCRIPTION:Livestream https://youtu.be/YbrAXus6ONo \nSeries: OLOFOS \nSpeaker: Lorenzo Rossi (University of Turin) \nTitle: “Supervaluational truth and quantifiers” \nAbstract \nQuantification has long been both a stumbling block and a testing ground in semantics. Building on Frege\, Tarski developed the modern model-theoretic semantics for first-order logic (FOL)\, but many quantifiers (because of the Compactness and Löwenheim–Skolem Theorems) cannot be expressed within FOL. Mostowski and Lindström extended Tarski’s framework to capture quantifiers such as “finitely many” and “most”\, giving rise to Generalized Quantifier Theory (GQT)\, now a standard tool in formal and natural language semantics. Still\, challenges remain\, especially where semantic indeterminacy arises. We focus on three sources of indeterminacy: (P) presupposition failure\, (V) vagueness\, and (L) semantic paradoxes. To address them\, we propose a general supervaluational framework for quantifier semantics in the presence of indeterminacy\, and we develop two formal systems that (a) meet key desiderata for handling P\, V\, and L\, and (b) recover a substantial fragment of GQT. Note: Joint work with Johannes Stern (University of Bristol).

SUMMARY:CEFISES Seminar: Caterina Schürch\, "The art of cherry-picking: Why integrating historical and philosophical analyses helps us to understand science"
DESCRIPTION:Livestream https://youtu.be/n_VBBaSyMKE \nSeries: HPS \nSpeaker: Caterina Schürch (TU Berlin) \nTitle: “The art of cherry-picking: Why integrating historical and philosophical analyses helps us to understand science” \nAbstract \nThe debate on integrated HPS is dominated by discussions about the methodological pitfalls that arise when attempting to combine historiographical and philosophical analyses. A common concern is that historical episodes are „cherry-picked“ to support specific philosophical concepts – and\, as a result\, such historical case studies cannot be used as empirical evidence to support the latter. In this talk\, I will argue that cherry-picking does not necessarily result in misleading claims about science. Selecting insightful historical episodes and philosophical frameworks is also not trivial. Indeed\, HPS scholars must justify their interest in certain events and concepts to two communities simultaneously. Fortunately\, History and Philosophy can complement each other\, providing the necessary rationale for each of the choices. Using examples from my analysis of interdisciplinary research during the interwar period\, I will demonstrate how philosophical concepts can inform the selection of specific historical events. Conversely\, historical analyses allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of philosophical frameworks in explaining past research practices. \nPhoto: Arie Jan Haagen-Smit (left)\, an organic chemist\, works on oat seedlings alongside botanists in the basement of the Botanical Laboratory at Utrecht University.
